Yielded
Bodies Being Made Whole in the Midst of the Fire

As the Son of God walks with those who
trust Him in the midst of the fire, their yielded bodies will be made whole. “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose,
walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form
of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
The phrase “not hurt” is one of the definitions
for the word “whole”. Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary tells me that WHOLE is an
adjective where it means: UNHURT: RESTORED - being healed: free of defect or
impairment: physically sound & healthy: free of disease: mentally or
emotionally sound. COMPLETE having all its proper parts: ENTIRE: undivided unit:
UNBROKEN: CONCENTRATED: very great in quantity, extent, or scope: entirety of a
person’s nature or development.
And so the miracle of the Fourth Man in the
Fire is that that fourth man is there in the fire with those three terrified
youths.

We often forget just how radical and
un-“God-like” this “God with us” truly is.
Daniel and his three friends, Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego, have his best interests at heart, respecting his power
and authority because it comes from God and so are free to serve him.-But for a
man like Nebuchadnezzar, who fails to understand the limits and origins of his
power, such respect is not enough. There must be nothing, not even god-status,
withheld from him. He must also be worshipped. This is the danger of idolatry,
for an idol knows no boundaries, no limitations. It demands all you have, and
more.
And so Nebuchadnezzar’s rage, which has
already found expression in the irrational demand that he makes of his court
magicians and theologians in chapter 2, explodes again, this time directed at
his faithful servants, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Frothing at the mouth
because they refuse to worship him as God, and don’t care that they will lose
their lives because of it, Nebuchadnezzar makes the fiery furnace even hotter
(killing his own soldiers in the process) in order to extract worship, not just
respect, from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
